“Hello, I’m Steve.
Thanks for visiting.”

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist & Group Analyst

Hello and thanks for visiting. I’m Steve and my job as a psychotherapist is all about helping people reconnect with themselves and their relationships. It’s through our relationships that we find out who we are – that’s been my story and was certainly the case when I began my career in mental health.

18 years old and feeling lost I met someone at my local bowling club in 1987. We became friends and seeing something in me, he encouraged me to apply for a mental health nursing post at the nearby hospital. I got the job and soon went on to train as a psychiatric nurse.

“It’s through relationships that we find out who we are.”

It was my nursing tutor who inspired me to become a counsellor and in 1995 following completion of a person-centred counselling diploma, I set up in private practice and also spent seven years working as a GP counsellor. I continued my development by completing a specialised training in psychodynamic psychotherapy in the NHS in 2008, which enabled me to work with more diverse and complex mental health issues. I have used all of these experiences as a student counsellor at the University of Sheffield over the past 20 years.

I’ve always enjoyed being in group situations which led me to work as counselling trainer from 1997 – 2004, running supervision and personal development groups. I was fascinated by the challenges and the richness of working in groups. My desire to understand how they functioned led me to embark on six years of professional training to become a group analyst and I qualified in 2016.

We are all faced with the challenge of being in groups, whether it is with family, friends or colleagues. This is why I offer group therapy and personal development workshops.

The benefits of group thinking also extend to the workplace and I’m really excited about using my group analytic training to help businesses get the best out of their staff and teams.

My counselling practice was written about in the Sheffield Star in 2011.
